Guide

Choosing a dumpster size

Three questions settle most size choices: how heavy is the debris, how bulky is it, and how much room is there to park the container?

Heavy or bulky?

Heavy debris: size down

Weight runs out before space does. A 10 or 15-yard filled partway is the usual answer.

  • Asphalt shingles
  • Concrete, brick, block and stone
  • Dirt, sod and gravel
  • Plaster and lath, ceramic tile
  • Cast iron tubs and radiators

Bulky debris: size up

Light things with awkward shapes fill a container fast and leave gaps.

  • Sofas, mattresses and chairs
  • Carpet and pad
  • Cabinets and doors
  • Boxes of household goods
  • Fence panels and deck boards

Count it in pickup loads

A level load in a full-size pickup with an 8-foot bed is roughly two and a half cubic yards. Picture how many trips the pile would take, multiply, and add a little for the gaps.

Four or so pickup loads points to a 10-yard. Six or seven is a 15 or 20. Beyond that, a 30 or 40, unless the material is heavy.

Measure where it will sit

Many 20, 30 and 40-yard containers run about 22 feet long. Add room for the truck behind it, which needs a straight run to back in and space to tilt its bed. Look up for wires and branches over the spot.

If a big container won't fit, two smaller swaps can do the same job. Where to put it has the full placement checklist.

Size questions

Is one large container cheaper than two small ones?

Not always. Each container means its own delivery and pickup trip, so ask the company to price both ways for your project.

What if I fill it before I'm done?

Ask about a swap: the company takes the full container away and leaves an empty one in its place.

Can I mix heavy and light debris?

Usually, yes, but the heavy part sets the weight. Tell the company the mix so the allowance fits.

Got a pile and a date in mind?

One call reaches an independent dumpster rental company working the Davenport area. A rough idea of what's going in, and where the container can sit, is all you need to start.
