Dumpster permits in Davenport

If the container will block a Davenport street or sidewalk, the city wants a permit in place first. On your own driveway or lawn, that rule doesn't come into it.

The rule in plain words

The City of Davenport says anyone blocking the street or sidewalk with a dumpster, pod or other equipment must first get an Obstructions and Encroachments Permit. The rule is in Chapter 12.36 of the city code, and applications go through the city's online form.

What the city asks for

  • Proof of liability insurance
  • A hold harmless agreement, filed when the permit is issued
  • Traffic control that follows the Iowa Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Clear sight lines near corners, under the visibility triangle rules in city code 17.42.080

Who usually applies

The insurance certificate is usually the rental company's, so many companies apply for street placements themselves. Others leave it to you.

Ask on the call, before the drop-off date is set, and get the answer in writing.

Alleys and corner lots

Davenport treats alleys as public right-of-way (the city's alley program page says so). If the only open spot is the alley behind your garage, check with the city before the drop rather than assuming it's private.

On a corner lot, keep the container out of the sight triangle at the intersection, even on your own side of the curb. Drivers need to see around it.

Permit questions

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in my Davenport driveway?

The city's permit covers containers blocking the street or sidewalk. A container fully on your driveway doesn't block either. HOA covenants or a lease can still have their own rules.

Can the container hang over the sidewalk?

Not without the permit. Blocking the sidewalk counts the same as blocking the street.

Got a pile and a date in mind?

One call reaches an independent dumpster rental company working the Davenport area. A rough idea of what's going in, and where the container can sit, is all you need to start.

Rent a roll-off

Have your street, the project and the week you want it ready. The rental company quotes size, drop-off date and price.
