Project

Dumpster for yard waste and landscaping

Clearing an overgrown bluff lot or a hedge row makes far more than a few bundles. One rule shapes the whole job: yard waste can't go to the landfill here.

A container filled with limbs, brush and a stump at the back of a wooded yard above the river

Why the load has to stay green

The Scott Area Landfill says grass, leaves and logs may not be landfilled; they go to the Davenport Compost Facility instead. So tell the company your container is yard waste only, and keep bags of trash, lumber and plastic pots out of it.

Dirt, sod and rocks are a separate problem: the compost facility doesn't take them either. If the project includes digging out a bed or a patio, plan a second, small container for that.

Curbside rules are from the city's yard waste page: bundles tied with twine, no longer than 5 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds, during the season that starts the first full week of April. The compost facility is at 2707 Railroad St.

When a container beats the curb

A tree taken down, a fence line of honeysuckle cleared, or a whole lot reclaimed in one weekend. Brush is bulky and springy, so cut limbs short and lay them in one direction; a 20-yard of loose branches fills far faster than you'd guess.

Burning isn't the way out: Davenport's yard waste rules call open fires with leaves or grass illegal.

Yard questions

Can the tree service's debris go in my container?

Usually, yes, if the company allows it. Many tree services haul their own; ask yours first.

How long can yard waste sit in the container?

As long as the rental runs. Wet leaves get heavy, so cover the load if rain is coming.

Got a pile and a date in mind?

One call reaches an independent dumpster rental company working the Davenport area. A rough idea of what's going in, and where the container can sit, is all you need to start.
