What can't go in a dumpster
A roll-off from a Scott County home usually ends up at a landfill or a recycler, and both turn certain things away. Here's what to set aside and where it goes.

| Item | Why | Where it goes instead |
|---|---|---|
| Paint, solvents, pesticides, cleaners | Liquids and hazardous materials aren't allowed in the Scott Area Landfill | Household Hazardous Material Facility, 5640 Carey Ave, (563) 386-9575 |
| Motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze | Automotive fluids are on the landfill's banned list | The same Carey Ave facility |
| Medical sharps | A hazard to anyone sorting the load | The same Carey Ave facility |
| TVs, computers, phones, printers | The landfill sends electronics elsewhere | Electronics Recovery Center, 5650 Carey Ave, (563) 823-0119 |
| Batteries | A fire risk once crushed | Electronics Recovery Center |
| Refrigerators, freezers, AC units, dehumidifiers | They hold refrigerant and are handled separately | Scott Area Landfill, emptied first (fridges and freezers); or Davenport bulky pickup |
| Tires | The landfill lists them as their own item | Scott Area Landfill, or Davenport bulky pickup |
| Grass, leaves, logs | Yard waste may not be landfilled | Davenport Compost Facility, 2707 Railroad St, or a yard-waste-only container |
The hazardous material facility and the Electronics Recovery Center are open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on the first Saturday of the month from 8 to 11:30 a.m. (current hours). Households in Scott and Rock Island counties can drop off without an appointment.
The Scott Area Landfill is at 11555 110th Ave in Buffalo Township, (563) 381-1300. It asks that every load arrive tarped or tied down.
Companies keep their own lists on top of the landfill's. Mattresses, tires and appliances are often allowed with an extra charge, and some won't take them at all. Ask before you load anything unusual.
Davenport's bulky pickup counts furniture, appliances and tires as bulky waste, collected every other week on your recycling day. For a single fridge or a few tires, that may be simpler than paying extra to put them in a container.
