Roll-off dumpster sizes
A cubic yard is a block three feet on each side. A 20-yard roll-off holds twenty of them if everything packs perfectly, which it never quite does.

10-yard

15-yard

A kitchen tear-out, or a basement of stored furniture.
20-yard
Often about 22 ft long, 8 ft wide, 4 ft high
Whole-house cleanouts of smaller homes and many roof tear-offs.
30-yard
Often about 22 ft long, 8 ft wide, 6 ft high
Additions, large estates, or a deck and fence coming out together.

The 20, 30 and 40-yard containers usually share a footprint and differ in wall height. A taller wall means more lifting over the side, so a rear door matters more as the size goes up.
Every rental includes a weight allowance, and heavy debris uses it up long before the container looks full. Shingles, plaster, tile, concrete and wet soil are the usual culprits.
Loads are typically weighed after pickup, and weight over the allowance is billed on top of the rental. Some companies also cap how high heavy material can go in the larger sizes, because a full container of it would be too heavy to lift onto the truck.
If your project is mostly heavy material, a smaller container filled partway often makes more sense than a big one. Say what the debris is when you call.

- Take furniture apart and break down boxes. Flat pieces stack; whole dressers trap air.
- Put heavy items in first and spread them along the floor, not in one end.
- Use the rear door for wheelbarrows and long pieces, then latch it shut.
- Stop at the rim. Anything sticking up can stop the pickup until it's taken off.
Still unsure? Choosing a size works it out from your project.
